The Young Mill-Wright and Miller's Guide by Oliver Evans
Writing in an era when many tradesmen had limited education, the author undertakes to teach the reader all that is necessary to build and run water-powered grain mills and saw mills. He starts with physics, including the mechanical advantage of basic tools, the effect of friction, etc., all basics that a mill operator of the day needed. He goes on to deal with the different types of water wheels, the construction of a mill for efficiency and economy, maintenance of millstones, and the dozens of other considerations integral to operating mills. The breadth and depth of material is remarkable. Seldom does a reference book remain a standard for as long a Evans' has, but it remains today (170 years after he wrote it) the standard reference for water-driven mills.
