In this book, which attempts to introduce interior decorations unique to Japan, we have chosen as our examples chiefly those features and objects which made up Japanese interiors of about 50 years ago, rather than those of today, which are based on intense cross-cultural stimulation. The interiors of 50 years ago were formed of patterns inherited from the preceding ages. Here we have assembled the interiors and furnishings from merchants' homes, farmers' houses, ordinary dwellings, as well as the historical daikan-yashiki which were still to be seen then, and the chashitsu, or tea-houses, which are of such fundamental importance in any discussion of Japanese culture.
