ERIC TALMADGE is the Tokyo bureau chief of the Associated Press. His articles on bathing in Japan have appeared in The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Toronto Globe and Mail, the New York Post and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, among other publications. He has been a resident of Japan since he was 19 years old.
