Architecture of the Pennsylvania Dutch Country: 1700-1900 by Henry J. Kauffman
A lifetime of devoted research and expertise has produced Pennsylvania Dutch Architecture, written and photographed by Lancaster County native Henry J. Kauffman.
This is an excellent overview of the English, German, and Swiss architectural designs found in southeastern Pennsylvania. Here you will enjoy reading about their houses, barns, furniture, smokehouses, icehouses, springhouses, summerhouses, privies, bake ovens, caves, and churches.
Not only do the descriptive photographs tell the story so well, but a well written narration also provides insights into life in Pennsylvania during the past three hundred years.
A graduate of York High School, Millersville State Normal School, and the University of Pennsylvania, Henry J. Kauffman is well-known for his teaching career at Millersville State College (now Millersville University) from 1942 to 1973. He became proficient in the industrial arts as he taught courses in antiques, tinsmithing, blacksmithing, coppersmithing, silversmithing, and pewter.
Kauffman's publishing career began with articles published in a variety of magazines and newspapers. In 1975, his thirteenth book titled The American Farmhouse was first published. His other books very capably cover subjects on early metal, guns, fireplaces, and folk art.
Another commendable contribution was made in the 1970s when he and his wife, Zoe, donated an impressive collection of antiques to the Rock Ford-Kauffman Museum at the Rock Ford Plantation near Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
