A new edition in handy paperback format of the book about which Smithsonian magazine said "a readable and splendid account...'sweep' is not too grand a word for this rick and meticulous manuscript."
At the time of the first publication, A Long, Deep Furrow seemed to be an obituary for the New England agriculture. Since 1976 however, spurred on by increasing awareness of the area's vulnerable food supply-and a little nostalgia- a new generation of persons emerged to lead what future historians will record as the farming renaissance in New England. Many were influenced by Russell's book, which served as a constant reminder of a rich and varied past still capable of being recreated.
