When you are in a world filled with terms like splocket, oriel and modillion, you need a glossary. This wonderful old glossary covers English architectural terms from abacus (the top member of a capital) to zig-zag (a shallow Norman enrichment used mainly on string courses), complimenting the 1000-plus definitions with essays on the most encompassing words, such as "Gothic architecture", and using 265 illustrations to make it all comprehensible. It also includes an extensive list of saints most commonly found in paintings and sculptures as well as the artifices by which you might recognize them. For example, St. Hubert, patron saint of the chase, would be identified by a stag with a crucifix between its horns. St. Denis, the patron saint of France (who died in the first century B.C.) would be carrying his own head, indicating the historic antagonism may be of longer standing than many of us thought. An excellent guide to the meaning of terms not usually included in general dictionaries.
