Here are selections from the works of a number of early British woodworking authors, presenting many specialized joints, techniques and designs. Some are not covered in current texts, as they depend on joinery not readily accomplished except with hand methods.
In six sections, the book covers:
- ship joinery (the intricacies of fitting work in tight spaces with curved surfaces, etc.)
- church fittings (pews, benches and bench ends, pulpits, tracery moldings, etc.)
- house fitments (cabinets, wardrobes, ingle nooks, mantels, panels, shame beams, etc.)
- doors, frames and paneling (including ledged doors, Gothic doors, shutters, fan lights, etc.)
- joints, fastenings, and fittings (tease tenons, chase mortises, hammerhead key joints, locking scarf joints, etc.)
- joinery design and ornament (milled and carved moldings, stair brackets, door heads, etc.)
A few of the terms may not be familiar, but are made clear by the excellent line drawings.
As a source of information covering a wide variety of specialized work, the book is fascinating to read for historical reasons, as well as for practical instruction.
