They made it possible for small-town carpenters, who were already skilled in rudimentary carpentry and house construction, to give their buildings sophistication and style. There were instructions for raising and supporting several types of roofs, constructing winding stairs, spacing fluting evenly on columns, modeling and mounting friezes, etc. Carpenters were thus able to plan, build, and decorate complex, ornate structures.
The American Builder's Companion includes rules and definitions of practical geometry and discussion of methods for drawing basic shapes and cutting them out of solids. There are designs for interior ornament -- patterns for decorative cornices, moldings, banisters, stucco ceiling ornaments, mantels, etc., as well as designs for doorways and windows. Benjamin also deals with problematic structural elements, and finally provides full plans and elevations for private houses, wooden churches, and a court house.
Important as one of the single, major disseminators of a style which became almost ubiquitous in the Northeast, Benjamin's book also contains a rich store of evidence on problems and achievements of early American builders. Direct references to tools, materials, common practices and processes, and unconscious indication of taste and aesthetic values of the time will be invaluable to students of architecture, experts in restoration, and readers interested in American history and culture. He explores the many small outbuildings that can still be found at obscure rural farmsteads throughout the Tidewater and greater mid-Atlantic, in towns like Williamsburg and Annapolis, and at elite plantations such as Mount Vernon and Monticello. These structures were designed to support the performance of a single task: cooking food; washing clothes; smoking meat; storing last winter's ice; or keeping milk, cheese, and cream fresh. Privies and small offices are also addressed, as is the dovecote, in which doves were raised for their eggs, squab meat, feathers, and fertilizer. Often, these little buildings were clustered in such a way as to resemble a small village, knit together by similar design details and building materials: they were all constructed in weatherboards or in brick, for instance, or were arranged in a single file or positioned at the four corners of the yard.In this appealing book, featuring nearly a hundred crisp black-and-white photographs, Olmert explains how these well-made buildings actually functioned. He is riveted by the history of outbuildings: their architecture, patterns of use, folklore, and even their literary presence. In two appendixes he also considers octagonal and hexagonal structures, which had special significance, both doctrinal and cultural, in early America.Archaeologists and historians still have many questions about the design and function of outbuildings-questions that are often difficult to answer because of the ephemeral nature of these structures; they were not documented-any more than laundry rooms and storage units inspire rhapsodies today. It surveys works from the oldest heritage of wooden buildings (Kyoto's Buddhist temples and Scandinavia's pagan-inspired stave churches) to the latest cutting-edge designs, proving that wood is on the rise as the preferred material in these ecologically conscious times.

No region of the world with a native tradition of building with wood is left out. In North America, the book demonstrates the European origins of New England's clapboards and saltboxes, and later shows how such sophisticated California architects as Greene & Greene or Bernard Maybeck could blend age-old traditions of the Far East and Switzerland with a Pacific Coast sense of novelty and whimsy. Spectacular and diverse photographs highlight the architectural masterpieces of wooden architecture throughout the world, illustrating that wood is a building material with a deep history as well as a vibrant future.

The Geometrical Design of Saint David's Cathedral Nave Ceiling: A Geometer's Perspective by Laurie Smith

The Geometrical Design of Saint David's Cathedral Nave Ceiling: A Geometer's Perspective

by Laurie Smith

Known as Ty Ddewi (David’s house in Welsh), Saint Davids Cathedral stands at the outermost tip of a peninsula reaching westwards into the Atlantic ocean and has been a place of spiritual pilgrimage for almost one thousand five hundred years. It was built from purple stone quarried from the coastal cliffs at Caerfai by the Normans between 1180 and 1220. When the Norman nave arcades developed an outward lean due to poor foundations and a 13th century earthquake the solution was to remove the original high roof and replace it with a low roof over a flat ceiling with arch braced hanging pendants in preference to a heavier masonry vault. It is the design of this unique and exquisite oak framed pendant ceiling that is the subject of the book. The book’s text follows the path of observation, recording, analysis and design reconstruction of Saint David’s extraordinary nave ceiling. The observations were initially visual and subsequently photographic, with photographs being taken from the nave floor directly beneath specific elements of the ceiling.

The analysis and design reconstruction were carried out geometrically on computer, working directly from the photographs but simultaneously through a series of geometrical independent geometrical constructions. There are sixty photographs and drawings recording this process, linking what can be observed from the cathedral floor, exploring how the concept of the ceiling might have evolved geometrically and how it was converted into the magnificent timber structure that has crowned Saint Davids’ nave to the present day. The photographs, geometrical drawings and related text offer an illustrated step by step description of the design’s origin and evolution. Additionally, two appendices record the finding of a scribed daisy wheel based symbol found on one of the ceiling’s floor boards and it’s interpretation and the geometrically designed helmets of carpenters or masons found carved into the arms of the cathedral choir’s choristers’ seats.

Published by The Carpenter's Fellowship

For more great downloadable articles on historic building geometry, please visit Laurie's website https://historicbuildinggeometry.uk/downloads/

Hidden Japan: An Astonishing World of Thatched Villages, Ancient Shrines and Primeval Forests: An Astonishing World of Thatched Villages, Ancient Shrines and Primeval Forests
"A sharp-tongued spokesman for Japan's environment and traditions" --The New York Times

In Alex Kerr's critically acclaimed Lost Japan and Dogs and Demons, he documented the decline of the traditional landscapes of Japan, his adopted home of many years. Mills from Astoria to Brookings belched smoke and shipped lumber throughout the world. As the industry responded to its worldwide market, it went from boom to bust and back to boom. Every decade brought new technologies that meant fewer loggers could cut more trees and send them to mills faster than ever. This distinct region, which includes Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Russian Republic of Karelia, was dominated by coniferous forest and remained until well into the 20th century a largely rural society. Wood was seen as a living material - one that was permeated with myth and folklore - while the forest itself formed the background to everyday life. Indeed, no single source of material wealth has contributed more to the economy, art and culture of Fennoscandia than the forests. Nowhere is this contribution clearer than in the region's historic buildings, the vast majority of which were constructed in wood up until the late 19th century.

This is the first book to examine and record the distinctive wooden architecture of this region from the early medieval period to the early 20th century. Structured according to different wood types, it concentrates on domestic and religious buildings, as these formed the great bulk of historic architecture in the peninsula over many centuries. It begins by setting out the geographical, social and historic background, before discussing the way in which two different timber-building traditions emerged in the region. It then provides a detailed examination of different types of dwellings (rural and urban) and storage lofts, followed by a section on Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox churches, along with their free-standing bell-towers. The book concludes with a chapter outlining the development of wooden domestic and religious buildings during the closing decades of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th century.
foxfire-6-shoemaking-100-toys-and-games-gourd-banjos-and-song-bows-wooden-locks-a-water-powered-sawmill-foxfire-6-contributors-foxfire-fund-inc-author-wigginton-eliot-editor
Foxfire 6: Shoemaking, 100 Toys and Games, Gourd Banjos and Song Bows, Wooden Locks, a Water-Powered Sawmill: Shoemaking, 100 Toys and Games, Gourd Banjos and Song Bows, Wooden Locks, a Water-Powered Sawmill
Volume 6 of the "Foxfire" series covers shoemaking, 100 toys and games, gourd banjos and song bows, wooden locks, a water-powered sawmill, and other fascinating topics.
greater-medieval-houses-of-england-and-wales-1300-1500-volume-2-east-anglia-central-england-and-wales-greater-medieval-houses-ingram-academic-contributors-emery-anthony-author
Greater Medieval Houses of England and Wales, 1300-1500: Volume 2, East Anglia, Central England and Wales
Greater Medieval Houses of England and Wales, 1300-1500 is a three volume survey offering an assessment of nearly 700 houses and a synthesis of current knowledge and research. Forests were ubiquitous in early America, but it was only in selected areas that trees, rather than farming, attracted settlement. These areas constitute the lumberman's frontier, which appeared first in northern New England in the seventeenth century, followed by upstate New York, the Allegheny Plateau, the upper Great Lakes states, the Gulf South, and the Far West. The forest frontiers generated capital and building materials important in the nation's development, but they also left a legacy of environmental problems, class and urban-rural divisions, and economic frictions. The 1930s marked the end of the lumberman's frontier, but these consequences continue to shape attitudes and policies toward forests, most notably the questions "Whose forests are they?" and "How and by whom should forests be used?" Drawing upon recent work in social and economic history, as well as a wealth of historical data on forest industries and individuals, The Lumberman's Frontier neither glorifies economic development nor falls into the maw of gloom-and-doom. It puts individual actors at center stage, allowing the points of view of the workers and lumbermen to emerge. The Lumberman's Frontier will appeal to students and scholars of forestry, public policy, and environmental history, as well as to general readers interested in the history and settlement of the United States.
vernacular-buildings-and-urban-social-practice-wood-and-people-in-early-modern-swedish-society-contributors-nilsen-andrine-author
Vernacular Buildings and Urban Social Practice: Wood and People in Early Modern Swedish Society: Wood and People in Early Modern Swedish Society
Wooden buildings housed the majority of Swedish urban populations during the early modern era, but many of these buildings have disappeared as the result of fire, demolition, and modernisation. They were built during periods of urban transformation; disdained for their rural look and for the fire hazard they represented they were nevertheless valued for being warm, affordable and movable. This study reveals the fundamental role played by the wooden house in the formation of urban Sweden and Swedish history. Wooden buildings were particularly suited to mass production and relocation, which helped to realise the ideal town plan in the transformation of Swedish urban space. Early modern wooden houses feature more as archaeological remains and less as preserved buildings every year, thus examination and comparison of these two distinct datasets combined with historical records is important in this study. The author establishes how log construction, timber framing and post and plank buildings were used for a wide range of functions in both central and peripheral locations, and within all strata of society. New strategies were developed to create affordable warm housing while the housing stock featured both change and continuity of layout; the storeyed house contributed to evolution of the multiple unit structure. Surprisingly, this study establishes that timber-framing was more prevalent geographically and functionally than previous research indicated.

Ingenious Mechanicks: Early Workbenches & Workholding (signed by the author) by Christopher Schwarz

Published by Lost Arts Press, 2018

Workbenches with screw-driven vises are a fairly modern invention.
